There is perhaps nothing more liberating than supporting a good cause, and with Juneteenth, America’s newest federal holiday coming up, there’s no better time to start thinking about how you can support your town’s Black community than now.

Whether you’re white, black, brown, or anywhere in between, here are 5 ways anyone can support the cause.

1. Learn about it

The first step to being properly supportive of any cause is to be educated on the matter! Since Juneteenth is a relatively new nationally celebrated holiday, a lot of people are still learning about what it is and why they can/should be supportive. A good place to start is to connect with your local Black community and use the internet or library to read up on the matter.

2. Get involved with local organizations

There are tons of organizations, both national and local, that are strictly dedicated to Black rights and ending racism. Many of these organizations rely heavily, if not totally, on donations and volunteer work to continue. The best thing about donating and volunteering is that no amount of your help is too small.

3. Attend events

Black culture is amazing. From the music to the food and style –to name only a short few things– we have so much to thank their culture for! Many cities and towns throughout the nation are holding Juneteenth events in honor of the holiday that will be featuring an array of these many aspects and businesses we take for granted today. Attend an event and remind yourself of all we have to thank Black culture for. A simple Google search will help you find what’s going on near you. Join in on the celebration and see firsthand what it’s all about.

4. Buy from locally-owned Black businesses

Keep it local! Black businesses need your support too, not just today but every day. But, there’s no day like today to start. If you don’t know which businesses in your area are Black-owned and operated, again, a quick Google search will help you with locating them.

5. SHARE!

Whether it’s through social media or word-of-mouth, it costs a total of zero dollars and zero cents to share your support! Sometimes just being outspoken on a matter or business that you are passionate about is enough to convert and recruit others to get involved too.

And that’s it. There are so many simple ways you can get involved this Juneteenth no matter what race you are. We want to know what your plans are, so let us know in the comments!
