What To Do When Your Marketing Plan Isn't Going as Planned

Algorithm updates, life changes, money running out–the reason your marketing strategy isn’t working anymore could be caused by a host of reasons, and narrowing down the exact problem doesn’t always offer a helpful solution. Maybe you already know your budget doesn’t allow for better reach, or you just had a baby and you’ll definitely need to focus on that for the next few months–so now what–should you just give up? No! Here’s what you can do when your marketing plan isn’t going as planned.

    1. Revisit what’s working (and not). When is the last time you actually sat down and went over what’s working with your marketing strategy currently and what isn’t? Chances are what worked a year ago won’t be performing the same now–some things better, some things worse. As with any ongoing business plan, marketing should be revisited at steady intervals to catch potential issues and identify things that are working so you know exactly where to focus your energy.
    2. Reconsider what you need. Do you need the marketing company you hired or do you just want it because you don’t want to do the work yourself? Do you need the $1,000 advertising plan or can you suffice with a tier lower? Just because you want something (or it’s “easier”) doesn’t mean your business needs it or is even benefitting from it right now, plus it could mean saving money for better use.
    3. Reallocate your budget. Instead of putting all of your money and effort into one area of your marketing strategy–that clearly isn’t working–consider adding to or reallocating the budget to include something new (and hopefully reaching a new audience). That could mean running an influencer ad campaign or hiring a part-time videographer to help you with brand shoots–whatever it may be, remember that without change there will be no growth!
    4. Rediscover timeless marketing tactics. The internet is a powerful tool when it comes to connecting brands to their audience, but remember, businesses survived not long ago without it! Maybe your online ads aren’t hitting so hard because you’ve already reached your audience; now it’s time to reach new audiences in an old fashion way. Sure, it might seem outdated, but a billboard or radio ad might be exactly what your business is missing–or totally forgo spending money and just start knocking on doors.
